The Biophysics program allows students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to UM for prerequisite and major credit. Approval for credit of courses transferred from another institution towards your major requirements must go through the Biophysics program transfer approval process, outlined below.
- Biophysics majors must complete at least 15 credits at the 300-level or above in residence
- Biophysics minors must complete at least 9 credits at the 300-level or above in residence
Current UM Students
Prerequisite Courses
In order to transfer Biology, Chemistry, or Physics courses from another institution for prerequisite or outside core credit, please follow those department's rules for transfer credits.
Core Courses
In order to transfer courses from another institution for Biophysics Core credit, please refer to the Transfer Credit Equivalency Search. The courses listed on the database are pre-approved and will appear on your UM transcript once the course is completed and an official transcript is submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions showing the official course grade. No additional steps are needed.
If the course you are looking to take (or have taken) is not listed in the database, please obtain a detailed syllabus from the instructor or institution and send it along with any other supporting documents helpful to the consideration process to biophys-sso@umich.edu. In your email, be sure to include the following:
- The name of the institution where the course was taken (or will be taken)
- When the course was taken (or will be taken)
- Course name and number
- Your name and UMID number
Your email and these documents are then forwarded to our faculty evaluators. Evaluations take up to ten (10) business days. If approved for credit, the Biophysics program will submit a request to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to award credit for the coursework taken. You will be copied on this email as confirmation of approval. If denied credit, you will receive an explanation as to why from our faculty evaluators.
LSA Students
- No online courses are accepted for transfer credit
- All Biophysics transfer credits follow the general College of LSA Transfer Credit Guidelines
Non-LSA Students
- No online courses are accepted for transfer credit
- Consult your School/College to discuss their transfer credit policies and procedures
NOTE: Upper-level courses (400) are most representative of the research specialties in the field of Biophysics and of the UM Biophysics faculty and thus are crucial to a UM Biophysics major. However, in some cases an external upper-level course may be considered to fulfill a major requirement.
Prospective Transfer Students
Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency Search to see if your class has already been approved for transfer. Then if needed, follow the procedure for core course transfers listed above.
