Let's get to know Heather...

What inspired you to major in Sociology?

After taking my first Intro to Sociology class, I realized that medicine was just more than a human body and treating diseases. Understanding sociological concepts related to health and disease gives a fuller understanding of human health. I felt compelled to understand illness and disease from every angle, and I feel Sociology is the missing piece for many doctors.

What classes have you most enjoyed? Why?

I really enjoyed Health, Medicine, & Society (SOC 475) because it offers detailed explanations of disease patterns in varying populations. This course also used many different sociological concepts for practical applications, which allowed me to grasp a full understanding of the different viewpoints of different researchers. I also liked Intro to Sociological Theory (SOC 305). This is a challenging course, but really helps to appreciate the history of Sociology, where the discipline began, and what the founders of Sociology have to offer to modern day Sociology.

Have you participated in an internship or research experience?

I currently am conducting my own research on the perception of human suffering for my Honors thesis. I also completed a research project for UROP CCSFP in which I studied protein design, looking to build an inhibitory protein for a cancer proliferation pathway. I was able to present my full research and won a blue-ribbon at the summer symposium.

What advice would you give to students considering a major in Sociology at UM?

For those considering a Sociology major, expect it to be a lot more work than you may have anticipated. The study of Sociology takes dedication and practice, but is so very fulfilling. I would also say that you should apply to the Honors Program as well, because conducting your own research really helps to understand the full impact that a Sociologist has on public policy and change while also contributing to the field.

What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?

I am currently applying to medical school with the hopes of becoming a surgeon in the future.

Where is the best place in Ann Arbor to get late-night study food?

I'm partial to Domino's Pizza, but that's because I just love pizza!
