Let's get to know Mya...

What inspired you to major in Sociology?

I had originally taken an Intro to Sociology course through a dual enrollment program my senior year of high school. I quickly found that I enjoyed learning about the different social identities and institutions, and how they play a major role in shaping our society.

What classes have you most enjoyed? Why?

My favorite class thus far has been SOC 354: Law and Society. What I enjoyed the most was the fact that we discussed recent events in relation to law and how the media shapes our assumptions on how we view the legal system. I am currently taking SOC 295: The Experience of Social Class in College and the Community. It has been less than a month, but I already love this class! The readings are always interesting, and we have great discussions about how those with economic privilege (or lack thereof) are affected in relation to succeeding in college and beyond.

What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?

I came into the school year with an interest in pursuing law. However, my current involvements on campus have inspired me to receive my PhD in Sociology and become an educator/researcher. Only time will tell!

What advice would you give to students considering a major in Sociology at UM?

Be like Nike and JUST DO IT! Just kidding, I want you to be happy. If you think that Sociology is an "easy" major, think again. Be prepared (and willing) to challenge yourself and your thinking. Attend office hours and get to know your professors, especially if you want to learn more about what your opportunities are after graduating. I changed my major to Sociology this year and I can honestly tell you that I have never been happier. I have not had a single professor who did not seem to genuinely LOVE their job/area of teaching. This encourages me to do well in the course and communicate with my professors outside of the classroom.

Have you participated in an internship or research experience?

Yes! I am currently a Research Assistant for the Sociology Opportunities for Undergraduate Leadership (SOUL). I interview first-generation college students like myself to learn about their college experiences in efforts to gain a better understanding of what the needs for first-gen students are. By doing so, the goal is to help the university create policies specifically geared toward first-gen students so that they can succeed at the university.
