Let's get to know Atiya...

 

Hometown: West Lafayette, Indiana

Major/Minor: Sociology major; Sociology & Social Work sub-major

 

What inspired you to major in Sociology?

As a member of a blended family, I have been exposed to cultural differences at an early age, sparking a curiosity regarding the socialization of different groups. I also really value justice, and highlighting marginalized identities has always been important to me. I believe studying Sociology is part of my role in making the world more just!

 

What classes have you most enjoyed?

The first class in this department that I took was SOC 102: Labor, and it truly affirmed my decision to major in Sociology. I learned so much about the field through the lens of labor unions, and I'm so grateful for that experience. I also found SOC 225: Project Community to be very fulfilling. Through this class, I tutored at 826Michigan, an organization that aims to encourage students to develop writing skills and explore their creativity. I also have been enjoying taking SOC 326: Theories and Practices for Community Action and Social Change, where I could create my own community action project and learn from my peers.

 

How has Sociology helped you to understand the pandemics the U.S. is currently facing: COVID-19 and/or systemic racism?

Sociology has given me the language to express the various forms of marginalization and privilege that my peers and I have experienced in a way that many others in my position have not had access to. I don't take that lightly and I plan to use this knowledge to make a positive difference in the world.

 

Have you participated in undergraduate research, fieldwork, or an internship experience?

I have interned for the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's office, and I currently work with them!

 

Do you have advice for prospective Soc majors in this moment?

I would advise all students to exercise their agency. Remember that you have the power to shape your educational experience here. Reflect on your values and goals, then pursue a path in line with them!
