Let's get to know Dillon...

What classes have you most enjoyed? Why?

I've enjoyed all the classes I've taken, but especially the theory focused classes. Professor Steinmetz's section of SOC295, Critical Sociology was excellent. Intro to sociological theory with Terence McGinn was also a favorite (SOC305). Last but not least Professor Göçek's seminar on postcolonial theory (SOC595) is a great theory class. I suppose I like theory classes because of the ability that theory gives one to look at the world from new angles, which in my opinion, is one of the great strengths and gifts of studying sociology.

What inspired you to major in Sociology?

One of my first courses in sociology was Criminology (SOC368) with Professor Morenoff, reading "The New Jim Crow" certainly played a big role in inspiring me to major in sociology. In fact the topics of racial inequality and mass incarceration also inspired my current thesis project.

What advice would you give to students considering majoring Sociology at UM?

If you like it, do it. Take advantage of the great opportunities here.

Have you participated in an internship or research experience?

Yes, 3 summers ago I assisted PhD candidate Matthew Sullivan through SURO, which I definitely recommend to other undergraduates to take advantage of. I've also been able to do my own research through independent studies and the honors thesis program.

What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?

Travel, teach, write, and pursue a PhD in Sociology in some way or another. I was just accepted as one of the Bonderman Fellows, so I will be traveling through that program! Also, I would like to open a restaurant because my second passion is cooking.

Where is the best place in Ann Arbor to get late-night study food?

I don't know if I would call it study food, but the best late night food in Ann Arbor is hands down at Fleetwood Diner at the corner Ashley and West Liberty. Get the Hippy Hash!
