What inspired you to major in Sociology?

I took Intro to Sociology and realized that it put things I had always been thinking into words. I found that I really enjoyed being pushed to look at the world in different ways and think critically about my surroundings.

What classes have you most enjoyed? Why?

SOC 305: Intro to Soc Theory was great because learning the foundations helped me fully understand what sociology is as a discipline. SOC 295: Urban Inequality (now SOC 335) was also an excellent course. It broke down the conventional wisdom I'd previously held and helped me gain a new perspective on urban issues.

Have you participated in an internship or research experience?

I'm currently a research assistant through SURO (SOC 394) on a project studying neighborhood change. I create maps on GIS from census tract data and help with coding.

What do you hope to do after graduating from Michigan?

After graduation, I'll be pursuing a Master of Urban Planning. I hope to someday work as a planner in areas experiencing rapid urban growth.

What advice would you give to students considering a major in Sociology at UM?

Look into the research opportunities available. Working as a RA is a great opportunity to explore a specific interest and connect with someone who is knowledgable on that topic.

Where is the best place in Ann Arbor to get late-night study food?
