Congratulations to U-M alumni Catalina Piatt-Esguerra for her new position as Associate Dean for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility at the University of Virginia Library.

Catalina earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2019 and wrote a dissertation titled “Branding Colombianidad: Violent Myths and New Visions in Contemporary Cultural Production.”

She also worked as a Graduate Success Coach for first-generation students of color in the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives and co-led orientation programming for incoming students through the Office of New Student Programs.

At the University of Virginia Library, Piatt-Esguerra is the University Library’s leader in this area and will work to advance the library’s mission as well as the university’s 2030 goals for Inclusive Excellence. The position also includes to help “synthesize, integrate, and further catalyze the Library’s inclusion, equity, diversity, and accessibility efforts across all aspects of the Library’s mission.”

Piatt-Esguerra’s “experience spans almost a decade in secondary and higher education spheres, and she focuses on empowering leaders to build their capacities in DEI towards building inclusive institutional climates.”

Alongside her work at UVA, she also serves as a University of Michigan alumni volunteer in the Each One, Reach One (EORO) minority recruitment program.
