Ten years after Toledo's water system shut due to a toxic cyanobacterial bloom in Lake Erie, harmful blooms remain a significant issue. Despite advisories warning of unsafe algal toxins, people continue to enter the water at Maumee Bay State Park. Agricultural practices and industrialized farming have led to increased nutrient runoff into Lake Erie, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, which feed these blooms.
