Active for more than 50 years, GeoClub is a student-run organization that welcomes both undergraduate and graduate students. It provides a forum for students with a strong interest in Earth and environmental sciences who want to learn more about this exciting field. In addition to its academic goals, GeoClub offers its members opportunities for professional development, networking, career preparation, and science communication and outreach.
GeoClub's monthly meetings during the academic year serve as a casual setting for members to practice conveying their science to a broad audience by giving presentations on their research, internships, and lab and/or field experiences. In addition to these presentations, meetings function as an opportunity to discuss ways to improve the student experience, plan and organize events, and offer a setting for community building. As is the case with most club events, and certainly the monthly meetings, free food is provided.
Students in GeoClub coordinate educational camping trips, host career preparedness events and professional development workshops, and are responsible for planning several annual departmental social functions where students and faculty can meet in an informal setting.
GeoClub:
- Encourages communication among the students, researchers, and faculty
- Provides a forum for speakers to make presentations to the community
- Organizes career development and professional networking opportunities
- Offers resources to students interested in Earth sciences
- Participates in outreach programs to promote interest in the Earth sciences
- Organizes academic, social, and cultural activities such as the graduate-student retreat and the undergraduate camping trip, as well as department-wide events like the annual Fall Picnic and Spring Banquet
- And more!
The club is always excited to welcome new members. Membership is not required to attend meetings or events, and attendance is not a commitment to membership. Find out how you can get involved in GeoClub by visiting their site here, or check them out on Instagram @geoclubumich.
