Richard Abel curated three separate programs of early American westerns (1908-1912) at the Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone, Italy, earlier this month: cowboy films, Indian pictures, and cowboy girl films. His book Menus for Movieland was also one of three books discussed during a "book launch" held at the festival on October 8. Vincent Longo, selected to attend the collegium, spent the week participating in several Platonic dialogues -- sitting down with groups of experts in various disciplines -- and then ultimately collaborating with his peers on a collection of papers on themes emerging from and/or inspired by these dialogues and his experiences.
