The doctoral program in the Department of Film, Television, and Media emphasizes the study of those forms of representation produced for exhibition and consumption through a screen—whether a cinema screen, television screen, video monitor, or computer display. Screens serve as a point of intersection where various industries, production practices, modes of representation, and audiences converge and from which a range of ideologies, identities, and cultural formations emerge. The Department of Film, Television, and Media assumes a strong commitment to studying the disciplines of film studies, television studies, and digital media studies and their various social, cultural, national, transnational, and/or historical contexts.
The Department continues to offer a certificate in the Department of Film, Television, and Media to graduate students enrolled in affiliated doctoral programs at the University of Michigan.
