Mitchell Scholar Events and News
Fall 2024
On Monday, December 9th, Mitchell Scholar Jack Buchholz met with John H. Mitchell Visiting Professor, Kemp Powers. During their meeting, Powers gave Buchholz some insights into the film industry and shared his experiences as a director and screenwriter. Later on in their meeting Buchholz conducted and video interview with Powers for the student organization M-agination.
On Friday, January 17th, 2025, the Mitchell Scholars met with the FTVM Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Vince Yi, Student Services Manager, Sofia Carlsson, and Program Assistant, Lucy Koukoudian. During the meeting, the Scholars discussed projects they are going to be working on during the Winter 2025 semester and aspirations for their careers in the film industry.
In February, the Mitchell Scholars met with Gabrielle Piazza and Jovan Osborne the Assistant Director and Program Coordinator for the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance's EXCEL Lab. The EXCEL Lab's mission is to provide resources and prepare students for a career in the arts. Each of the Scholars had a one on one session with the EXCEL team to develop their creative resumes.
On March 14th, 2025, current Mitchell Scholars Bethany Carter and Jack Buchholz along with 2022-2023 Scholar Lauren Horne met with screenwriter Hillary Seitz to gain insights on a career in writing for film! Seitz is known for her work on The Italian Job, I-Robot, and The Unforgivable. She was the Winter 2025 special guest for the FTVM Screenwriting Program!
On April 11th, 2025, our Mitchell Scholars met with FTVM Screenwriting Professor Cindy Davis for a professional development workshop! Cindy provided a wonderfully insightful presentation on breaking into the industry, forming connections, and applying for competitions. She also gave advice on how to be an impactful screenwriter as you work to reach out to agents and managers! Thank you so much Cindy for this amazing opportunity!
On Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, The Mitchell Scholars attended the John H. Mitchell Critical Conversation Symposium. The symposium featured a panel led by John H. Mitchell Visiting Professor, Kemp Powers and included screenwriters Kenny and Keith Lucas (The Lucas Brothers) and Dave Callaham. The Scholars alon with other FTVM students had the opportunity to hear about the panel members’ experiences in the film industry and ask them questions about the future of screenwriting.
On Friday, February 7th, 2025, the Mitchell Scholars 2024-2025 cohort (Jack Buchholz, Cierra Leggs, and Bethany Carter) and previous Mitchell Scholar from the 2023-2024 cohort (Sydney Sweeney) met with screenwriter and producer, Robb Chavis. Chavis is known for working on Blackish, Frasier, Superior Donuts, and The BrkDwn. He was able to share his experiences in the film and televsion with the scholars and provide some advice on breaking into the industry.
On Thursday, Febraury 27th, 2025, the Mitchell Scholars met with the FTVM alums Brendan Dewly and Oscar Kaye via Zoom to learn about their journies developing careers post-graduation. The scholars were able to gain new perspectives on post-grad life, ask questions, and recieve wonderful advice from Dewley and Kaye. The alums shared their experiences developing their own projects in New York City and breaking into the industry.
On April 8th, 2025, current Mitchell Scholars Bethany Carter and Cierra Leggs along with fromer scholars Lauren Horne, Lauren Freedman, and Sydney Sweeney met with screenwriter Maegan Houang of FX"s Shogun to learn about breaking into the industry after graduation, financially navigating their careers, and how to develop a routine to create the art they are passionate about!
