The University of Michigan’s Residential College (RC) is honored to announce the establishment of the Ann E. Savageau Residential College Visual Arts Community Student Award.
This new endowed award, made possible by a generous gift from Michael Savageau in honor of his wife, Ann Savageau, will recognize a graduating RC or RC-affiliated student each year who has made outstanding contributions to the visual arts community.
Ann Savageau, a former RC faculty member, artist, and educator with a deep commitment to community engagement, has left a lasting impact on the RC’s Visual Arts Program. In her honor, the newly established fund will provide an annual award of at least $1,000 to a student whose work reflects a dedication to the betterment of the visual arts community.
Eligible students may demonstrate their contributions through RC coursework, community-engagement efforts in the arts, support for underserved communities, environmental advocacy through art, or work with incarcerated populations.
The selection process will be overseen by a committee of RC visual arts and community engagement instructors, coordinated by the head of the RC visual arts program. The timeline for the selection aligns with the RC’s senior awards process. In addition to receiving financial support, the awardee will be recognized with a certificate, and their contributions will be shared with the Savageau family.
“This award reflects Ann’s passion for art, community, and social engagement,” said Michael Savageau. “It is my hope that it will inspire students to continue using their artistic talents to make a meaningful impact.”
The first recipient of the Ann E. Savageau Visual Arts Community Student Award will be announced this spring alongside the annual RC Senior Awards. The Residential College is deeply grateful for this meaningful gift, which will support students and honor Ann’s legacy for years to come.
