At the Residential College, students don't wait to be heard. RC Student Union (RCSU), formerly RC Student Republic, is your student government: the body that represents RC students and carries your voice straight to the faculty, staff, and administration who shape your experience. From your very first term, you have a real say in how the community runs.
What We Do
We represent students on academics, housing and facilities, student life, and DEI; we gather and act on your feedback through forums, surveys, and committees; and we advocate for the resources that make the RC better. It is one of the clearest signs of how student-led the RC really is.
Progress We're Making
Students have helped run the RC since the 1960s and 70s (read the Michigan Daily story), and that tradition still turns into real wins. Take room reservations: under the old first-come, first-served system, outside groups could book East Quad spaces weeks ahead, leaving RC students and residents unable to reserve rooms in their own building. RCSU pushed for a fix, and now RC students and affiliated orgs get priority access to reserve classrooms and meeting spaces in East Quad. We have also hosted fireside chats that give students a relaxed, personal way to connect with RC faculty and staff and build relationships with the people who lead the college. And through feedback gathered at our Town Hall, we have brought student input on academic requirements directly into RC course and curriculum planning.
Be Part of It
Any RC student can join, with no dues. You become an active member just by attending one General Assembly meeting or answering one RCSU survey per term. From there you can speak at meetings, vote, run for office, and bring your own ideas forward.
Have an idea or an issue you want addressed? Contact the RCSU Executive Board at rcsu.Eboard@umich.edu, join our mailing list or come to our next General Assembly meeting. Long live the Union!
