Declaring a Major or Minor

Choosing a major or minor is an important step in your academic journey. Declaring your program officially lets the university know which area of study you're pursuing and connects you with faculty and academic advisors who can help you plan your coursework and progress toward graduation. Many students declare a major during their sophomore year after exploring introductory courses, but there's no single "right" time. If you're interested in an RC major or minor, meeting with an advisor early can help you understand the requirements and make a plan.

How to Declare an RC Major or Minor

Step 1: Explore your options

Take courses that interest you, review the requirements for the major or minor you're considering, and think about how it fits your academic and career goals. Check the websites for each major and review the required prerequisites for declaring that major. Taking these prerequisite courses often helps students to determine whether they are interested in that major.

Step 2: Meet with the appropriate advisor

Before declaring, schedule a meeting with the faculty advisor for the RC major or minor you're interested in. They can answer questions about the program, discuss requirements, and help you decide if it's the right fit. If you're not sure who to contact, RC Academic Services can help connect you with the appropriate advisor. When in doubt, come visit our office at EQ 1813, and we would love to help you.

After meeting with your major/minor advisor, they will officially declare you into the major or minor in the advising system.

Step 3: Confirm your declaration

After your declaration has been processed, your declared major or minor should appear in your student record. If you don't see the update after 1-2 weeks, contact your major or minor advisor for assistance.

Declaring an RC Program vs. an LSA Program

The declaration process depends on the program you're pursuing.

  • If you're declaring an RC major or minor: You'll work with the appropriate RC faculty advisor and complete the RC declaration process.
  • If you're declaring a major or minor offered by another LSA department: You'll follow that department's declaration process and requirements.
  • Not sure which process applies? Contact RC Academic Services—they can help you determine the correct next steps.
