Theater and Arts Programs

Overview

These programs use theater, writing, and the arts to connect the RC with communities on and off campus. You will collaborate with people of many backgrounds and use art as a tool for learning and change.

  • Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP): PCAP brings people impacted by the justice system together with the U-M community for artistic collaboration, mutual learning, and growth. Founded in 1990 with a single theater workshop, it now runs courses, exhibits, publications, and events that reach thousands of people each year.
  • Shakespeare in the Arb (SITA): SITA is a summer theater collaboration between the RC and Nichols Arboretum where there is no stage: the audience walks with the actors as the play moves through the 120-acre Arb. Each cast mixes students, faculty, staff, and community members of all ages, making it as much an exercise in collaboration as in performance.
  • Telling It: Telling It is a community-based expressive arts program that prioritizes the social-emotional and mental health needs of young individuals by offering safe, uncensored, and judgment-free spaces. We organize community-based weekly 90-minute creative programming for Ypsilanti-based youth, youth experiencing housing insecurity, and justice-involved youth.
