Community Resource Program

The Ann Arbor Public School (AAPS) Community Resource (CR) Program is a learning experience intended for AAPS high school students who have exhausted their language curriculum and are seeking to take courses beyond what is taught in the Ann Arbor Public School system.

Placement

Students who have completed an AP or IB (HL only) language course and scored a 4 or higher on the AP or IB test do not need to take a placement test. Instead, they are eligible for a fifth-semester course (with instructor permission and an available seat after U-M students enroll). Fifth-semester courses include: Spanish 277, French 235, or any course beyond Italian 232 or Portuguese 232.

Students who are studying a language for which AP/IB courses are not offered, and have some prior study, will need to take an RLL Placement Test. CR students’ scores will be available several business days after taking the placement test, and CR students receive their scores through the AAPS CR Program. Enrollment

Only once U-M students have finished registering will RLL know if there is available enrollment space in the language course in which a CR program student has placed.  This is generally after the fifth business day of the term has completed, but could be later than that.  The RLL enrollment timeline is detailed on the Registration & Academic Policies page. A CR Program student usually would begin attending from the beginning of the term, so as not to miss any of the material in case of receiving a seat in an RLL language course. 

In addition, the CR Program student needs to seek and receive permission from the instructor of the course in order to attend or eventually enroll (space permitting). CR students may check the LSA Course Catalogue to see if the desired course will be offered. For instructor and course schedule information, CR students may reach out to the RLL Undergraduate Team. Please be sure to provide your class availability. It may be as late as the week prior to the start of the term when language course instructors are assigned.

RLL language courses tend to be quite fully enrolled, so it is difficult to know ahead of time whether there will be available enrollment space for CR Program students once U-M students have finished enrolling. The enrollment capacity of our classes is 18 students per section (and 15 per section in 100 or 230 intensive courses).  It is a good idea for CR students to have a back-up course option in place in case of not receiving a seat in an RLL language course.
