About
Sabine Gabaron is a French native speaker who received two M.A.s from the Université Paris 7, France, one in Second Language Acquisition, and one in English Language and Civilization with concentration in American Literature. Originally hired at the University of Michigan as an exchange lecturer in 1996 while starting her dissertation in France, she continued teaching at UM until she became faculty in 2001. She is currently a Lecturer IV, Teaching professor. Sabine coordinated elementary French from 2002 to 2006 and in winter 2014, and directed the Elementary Language Programs in the spring for many years. She also directed the summer program abroad in Grenoble, France, in 2018. Sabine teaches across the curriculum in French both in the ELP and in the ULP in addition to a graduate reading course French 113, taught in English. She developed several French 232 topics courses in the past 20 years, around various themes (BDs or French comics, politics, food, sports, Québec, music and songs). She has also taught a couple of upper-level classes abroad with CGIS, in Grenoble. She is currently the RLL Intership course coordinator.
Since her first year at the University of Michigan, Sabine has been interested in developing new teaching techniques involving ever-changing technology (from ppt and iChat in the late 90s to Harmonize and chatGPT), encouraging meaningful communication in an inclusive classroom environment, and motivating students to express their passions and interests in French, to feel empowered and be successful. Teaching remotely during the pandemic has deepened her awareness of inequities and motivated her to become more active in her Department regarding DEI issues. She is currently working on several projects allowing her to reflect on how to better apply DEI principles to teaching and course development.
