José Luis Fernández García is a committed educator and performer whose career at the University of Michigan spans over 25 years. José's teaching philosophy centers around forging connections with his students, ensuring that his classes are not just informative, but also engaging and relevant to their lives. He believes students should remember studying Spanish as an experience they enjoyed.
José has created two topic courses that showcase his diverse interests. One of these courses explored the life and works of the renowned Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, offering students an understanding of his literary legacy. The second course studied the intricate relationship between culture and music in the Latin world, providing students with a comprehensive view of the vibrant and diverse Latin music landscape.
Beyond the academic realm, José has a background in theater. He has acted in Shakespeare in the Arb for numerous years under Kate Mendeloff. José is also passionate about Argentine tango. He teaches and performs Tango with his partner, Sophia Daly. José is currently teaching Tango classes at Michigan Argentine Tango Club (MATC), at the University of Michigan. These artistic pursuits not only enrich his own life but also allow him to share his passion and knowledge with others.
Looking to the future, José has set ambitious long-term goals. His primary aim is to maintain a strong and lasting connection with his students while fostering an environment of open communication, curiosity and connection. He believes that these moments are pivotal in creating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for both him and his students.
