Staff HR Representatives

Who We Serve 

The LSA Staff Human Resources team supports LSA departments, managers, staff members employed under the Career Family Classification System, and temporary staff (students and non-students).

Our Goal 

We aim to provide expert HR guidance and strategic partnership to foster a positive and productive work environment, support staff success, and help LSA achieve strategic goals.

Service Overview

  • LSA staff HR representatives provide two types of services.
    • Expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating HR strategies across all domains of HR to enable staff and department performance.
      • Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Employment: In collaboration with our Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist, guidance on staff recruitment strategies, selection processes, and employment procedures.
      • Staff Compensation: Advising on staff compensation, pay competitiveness, salary programs, and job classification practices.
      • Employee Relations: Support and guidance on navigating workplace dynamics and conflicts. Expertise in staff performance practices.
      • Labor Relations: Expertise in navigating practices related to staff represented by University Staff United (USU) and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
      • Organizational effectiveness: Partnering with departments and staff to assess and enhance workplace culture, climate, manage change, and facilitate staff professional development initiatives.
    • HR oversight for LSA and the university
      • Policy, Laws, and Compliance: Administering U-M and LSA HR policies, procedures, and practices consistently and equitably. Advising on HR risk management. Development of LSA-specific HR policies.
      • LSA Staff Experiences: Developing and facilitating college-wide staff events and programs like New Staff Orientation, Staff Achievement Awards, and Spring Fling to build community.
      • Identifying Additional HR-Related Expertise: Through University Human Resources, the Shared Services Center HR team, the Office for Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX (ECRT), the Staff Ombuds Office, and Work Connections.

  • Jerri Atkins: Humanities Division, Social Sciences Division

  • Jennifer Stalmack: Undergraduate Education Division, LSA Opportunity Hub, LSA Advancement | Also supervises the SOS team.

  • Samantha McCoig: Natural Sciences Division | Areas reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director for Administration.

  • Lindsay Cogswell: Areas reporting to the Chief of Staff and the Director of Strategic Initiatives| Also supervises the Local HR (LHR) team.

  • Patrick Smitowski: Overall management of LSA HR.
