PhD student James Elrod's article, 'Navigating the Nebula: Audience affect, interactivity, and genre in the age of streaming TV,' recently appeared in a themed section titled 'Streaming and the Re-education of the Audience' edited by Barbara Klinger for Participations, the journal of audience and reception studies.
In the article, Elrod explores how encouraged modes of viewing across various streaming video-on-demand platforms re-shape how audiences affectively experience and interact with genre and generic texts. He considers what happens to collective audience discourses as the majority of viewers’ situated consumption of new serial content becomes increasingly accelerated, adaptable, and individualized.
