Professor Gunckel will use the award to complete his next monograph, Our Little Hollywood: Mexican Cinema after the Golden Age. Focusing on the relationships between the Mexican cinema and its various stakeholders, Our Little Hollywood considers how the industry navigated a tumultuous, transitional period between the studio-based productions of the 1940s and the government-funded art cinema of the 1970s. Based on extensive archival research in Mexico and the United States, the book’s interdisciplinary approach offers new ways of understanding a globally marginal (and maligned) cinema that sustained rich connections across media and national borders.
