Hailey is interested in studying the long-term effects of permafrost thaw on the composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in arctic freshwaters. As temperatures rise and the permafrost soil layer thaws deeper, it is expected that the ancient DOC stored in permafrost to be released and increasingly influence the composition of DOC in arctic lakes and rivers. This permafrost DOC can be rapidly oxidized by sunlight and microbes, producing carbon dioxide that is then released into the atmosphere. In her work, Hailey analyzes data collected through the Long Term Ecological Research project, which monitors the chemistry and biology of several arctic lakes and rivers on the North Slope of Alaska.
Outside of research, Hailey enjoy running through the Arb, reading fiction, and knitting sweaters.
