Earth Camp is a residential camp experience designed to excite and educate high school students about Earth science by getting them outdoors and exploring new environments like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Mackinac Island, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The program recruits rising sophomores and forms a community over three summers of week-long programming in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Ghana (COESSING)
The COESSING program aims to build capacity in oceanographic and environmental sciences in Ghana. Faculty and students from the University of Michigan among other US-based universities volunteer their time to offer a summer school for African scientists and students centered around oceanography, environmental sciences, programming, and professional development. The program involves about 15–30 US+European participants every year, and about 100 African participants. School activities include lectures, labs, field trips, boat trips, instrument deployments, and short research projects.
Fall Preview (see also Earth DEI Initiatives)
The Earth & Environmental Sciences Ph.D. program invites prospective graduate students who contribute to diversity and inclusion to visit us for Fall preview events. This event is an all-expenses paid opportunity to explore graduate education, participate in admissions workshops, meet world-renowned faculty and current graduate students, and learn about life in Ann Arbor. Usually for 15 participants; in Fall 2020 we hosted 23 participants virtually from across the US and international community.
