Program Selection

When selecting an intercultural experience, it is important for students to consider their personal, academic, and professional goals. Whether they hope to improve language skills, meet academic requirements, develop professional skills, or just step outside your comfort zone, each CGIS program offers unique benefits. Identifying objectives and expectations before beginning the search for a program will help students select an appropriate intercultural experience.

While many students first ask themselves "where should I go?" when they think about applying to study abroad, we encourage them to ask other questions as well.

  • What are their academic interests? Can studying abroad help them complement and/or make progress toward their specific concentration?
  • When can they go? Many students want to spend Fall semester on campus (Go Blue!), but sometimes the academic calendar of another country or the timing of certain events that they hope to study would argue in favor of another term. Is a semester too long? CGIS offers programs as short as 3 weeks. Is a semester too little time to meet a student's goals? Some choose to study abroad for an entire year, or to participate in multiple programs throughout their undergraduate years.
  • What is the language of instruction? Students might not realize that English is the official language of instruction at many institutions around the world, so they don't necessarily have to speak another language. We offer programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East that do not require any knowledge of a language other than English.

CGIS advisors are available year round to meet with students to help them select the program that will best meet their needs.
