No matter who you are, where you come from or what you're studying, an international experience is available to you during your time at U-M. If you've ever wondered about how you might be perceived abroad due to your identity, or how to prepare before you leave the US, we're here to help!
Our resources are avaible to browse by identity, by location, and more. Please consider this your starting point!
If you have more questions, we encourage you to do your own research beyond these resources. If you'd like to chat with a CGIS team member about these topics, we are here for you: you can always meet with a CGIS Peer Advisor or a Study Abroad Advisor - learn more on our Advising page.
Search for blogs by various identity-related tags such as Ethnicity, Nationality, Sexual Orientation, Spirituality, and more.
Goals and Intentions
At CGIS, our goal is to kickstart conversations about how identities are experienced in different regions worldwide. This guide isn't exhaustive—understanding global diversity fully would require deep anthropological studies. While we can't cover every identity, we view this guide as a work in progress and invite students and faculty to share their experiences to make it more comprehensive. Some examples and quotes may contain negative experiences, even in positive contexts. We recognize their impact on perceptions of other countries and aim to provide a balanced view. We're available to discuss any narratives or concerns you have before or during your travels. Please email CGIS with any questions or if you'd like to join the conversation.
