We are pleased to publish recordings from our seminar series, Accessible and Inclusive Learning Experiences. This three-part series is designed to provide participants with practical techniques to create accessible and meaningful learning experiences. During each session we are joined by Phil Deaton, the U-M ITS Digital Information Accessibility Coordinator. We appreciate the expertise Phil brings to each session.

Accessibility in Canvas and Course Materials

This workshop explores strategies that can be implemented in online courses to make course content more accessible. We will introduce you to digital accessibility and discuss its importance. We also identify practical strategies for creating accessible course materials.

We’ll cover:

  • The importance of digital accessibility in online courses

  • Strategies for creating accessible materials (Canvas, Word, PDF)

  • Accessibility tools available in Canvas

Creating Inclusive Assignments

Making course assignments inclusive is an important part of ensuring equal opportunities for students. Making an assignment inclusive should lead to better outcomes for all students. This workshop discusses practical strategies for making assignments more inclusive.

We’ll cover:

  • How scaffolding assignments can lead to better outcomes for all students

  • Inclusive techniques for creating groups

  • How to provide alternative assignments for students who need them

  • Campus resources for student assistance with assignments

Practical Steps for Inclusive Teaching

Inclusive teaching isn’t something that can be prescribed by an expert from outside the classroom. Rather, inclusive teaching is a mindset of teachers who want to adapt their teaching and classroom environment to support all learners.

This session will explore inclusive approaches for:

  • Treating students as individuals and individual learners

  • Designing course material

  • Allowing multiple modes of demonstrating learning

  • Integrating a variety of student engagement techniques
