Critical Conversations Series
This Department of Film, Television, and Media speaker series creates a space for film and media scholars and artists/practitioners to engage in dialogues about past and contemporary topics that influence media industries, audiences, and society at large.
February 2020
This conversation focused on jobs in the new media industries and the use of digital platforms for reaching different political constituencies. Moderated by Associate Professor Sheila Murphy and followed by a Q & A, participants included Tara McPherson (Professor and Chair of USC School of Cinematic Arts) and Phil Ranta (Head of Gaming Creators, North America at Facebook).
November 2019
This conversation explored documentary filmmaking practices in domestic and international settings and the association of documentary with political and social causes. The participants were documentary director Rayka Zehtabchi (winner of the 2018 Oscar for Best Documentary Short--Period. End of Sentence) and Assistant Professor Joshua Glick, who writes about documentary (and who, in 2018, published Los Angeles Documentary and the Production of Public History, 1958-1977).

Mavericks and Makers Symposia
U-M Library is home to extensive archives and materials documenting the careers of several American filmmakers known for coloring outside the lines: Robert Altman, Ira Deutchman, Alan Rudolph, Nancy Savoca, John Sayles, and Orson Welles. Together they make U-M a major destination for research on these American maverick filmmakers.
