Join SAC Associate Professor Johannes von Moltke and the Avant Garde Interest Group for a talk & film screening with with Professor Nick Rombes (Professor and Chair of English, University of Detroit Mercy) entitled "Vertical Time in Shane Carruth's Upstream Color."
Upon its release in 2013, Shane Carruth's Upstream Color received wide acclaim as an exemplar of modern experimental cinema. Carruth is best known for his 2004 debut Primer, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. In a review for the AV Club, Scott Tobias wrote:
"Now that Carruth has returned nine years later with Upstream Color, an intensely beautiful and enigmatic puzzle picture, it’s clear that Primer wasn’t some bolt from the blue, but the embryonic beginnings of a major filmmaker."
Rombes' talk will draw on Maya Deren’s notion of “vertical” versus “horizontal” structure in narrative to look at how Carruth’s Upstream Color — and to a lesser extent Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder (2012) and Nicholas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives (2013) — explore the experience of time as vertically structured. In what sense might these films express and embody a post-digital aesthetics?
