Graduate Speaking Clinic

The ELI Graduate Speaking Clinic serves U-M graduate students, faculty, staff, and scholars who want to improve their spoken English pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy. It provides a flexible framework in which learners can address their spoken English goals individually.

The Speaking Clinic is a short term resource for consultation on any aspect of speaking, for example, if you wish to increase the accuracy of your professional vocabulary, enhance your readiness for a presentation, augment your voice projection, or understand and repair communication breakdowns in particular situations. No academic credit is awarded for Speaking Clinic participation.

Students who have completed ELI speaking courses or who are referred by an ELI faculty member will have scheduling priority. The number of visits typically ranges from 1 to 5 sessions in a semester, depending on a participant’s goals and the demand for and availability of slots.

Location: In-person and online appointments available. In-person appointments take place in Weiser Hall, room 906. Online appointments take place on Zoom.

Speaking Clinic Guidelines [IMPORTANT: READ CAREFULLY!]

Guidelines

Speaking Clinic appointments are limited to five (5) per term.
International scholars are limited to one (1) appointment per clinic per term.
In appointment times are open, same-day drop-in sessions are often available on a first-come first-served basis.
Appointments are 45 minutes in length.
Appoinments can be made up to one week in advance.
Only one appointment can be made per week.
In-person and online appointments are available.

Cancellation:

If you cannot attend an appointment, you need to cancel at least 20 hours in advance. This makes it possible for another student to make use of Clinic time. If you cannot provide this notice, then you need to appear for your appointment. If you do not appear it will be counted as a no-show, and after 2 no-shows your account will be ddeactivated for the semester.

Eligibility:

Currently registered graduate students in any U-M school or college may attend ELI Graduate Speaking Clinic appointments.

International scholars (postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, Fulbright fellows, or Knight-Wallace Fellows) that are currently affiliated with a U-M school or college are also eligible, but limited to one appointment per clinic per term.

Availability:

Graduate Speaking Clinic appointments are available in Fall, Winter and Spring terms.
