We are saddened to share the news of the death of Dr. Robert (Bob) Owen (1946-2023), who passed away peacefully in his home in Ann Arbor on Saturday, June 10.
Dr. Owen was not only just a longtime professor and oceanographer inside the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, but also an integral part of the Michigan Earth community. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Bob moved to Ann Arbor in 1975 to begin his career as an assistant professor here at the University of Michigan. Bob was later promoted to full professor in the LSA Earth and Environmental Sciences. He had a long and decorated career, including time spent as the associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (1998-2004), and Director of the Program in Environment from 2005-2010. Bob was recognized by the Regents of the University of Michigan with the prestigious Arthur F. Thurnau award in 2012.
