Satellite images can tell us where the bloom is now. The forecast can tell us where the bloom is expected to go in the next few days based on forecasts of wind and water currents.
An article from Great Lakes Echo at Michigan State University highlights the ways in which scientists are able to use satellite imaging to predict the size and movement of algal blooms within a given season. Advancements have been made by NOAA from just seasonal forecasting to more precise daily predictions, which also provides insight to the onset and duration of the bloom. NOAA is continuously improving this technology, most notably to include toxicity predictions.
