Earth Camp

 

Earth Camp is an exciting residential camp experience for high-school students sponsored by the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Michigan. The curriculum is designed to educate and excite high school students about Earth and environmental sciences through a variety of hands-on experiences, outdoor activities, and through exposure to career opportunities in the Earth and environmental sciences. 

Earth Camp #1 – Ann Arbor and Sleeping Bear Dunes (June 20-25, 2020)

The first year of the program, rising sophomores complete a camp experience at U-M, Ann Arbor and Sleeping Bear Dunes.  Students stay in college dorms at UM to experience college life while participating in exciting field trips, then spend 3 days on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan (photos and more information here). Earth Camp #2 – Michigan’s upper peninsula (June 14-20, 2020)

In year 2, rising juniors complete a camp focused on the geology of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan by exploring and learning at: Mackinac Island, Kitch-Iti-Kipi Springs, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Marquette, MI, Jasper Knob, and Houghton, MI (photos and more information here). This Earth Camp experience is only open to students who participated in Earth Camp the previous summer.

Earth Camp #3 – Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks (June 28-July 5, 2020)

The final year of the program, rising seniors participate in a field camp in Wyoming, visiting Camp Davis Field Station and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks (photos and more information here). This Earth Camp experience is only open to students who participated in Earth Camp the previous summer.

Earth Camp aims to bring diversity to environmental sciences

Every summer for three years in a row, a diverse group of Michigan high school students spends a week exploring nature and learning about the environment through the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences’ Earth Camp. The camp hopes to spark interest among a new generation to enter the field.
