Networking is a critical component to finding out about careers and internships. Many of our alumni found their jobs via networking at internships, events, and more. So start networking today!
There are several networking opportunities for Earth and Environmental Science students.
University Career Alumni Network (UCAN)
UCAN is an online platform sponsored by the University Career Center (UCC) that enables students to find and connect with alumni who have volunteered to offer career advice via informal conversations and one-on-one mentoring. These networking conversations will help you evaluate, prepare, and successfully compete for work-related opportunities (e.g., internships, professional school, or full-time employment). Within this platform, we have a networking group specific to the EARTH department.
Participation is easy! Please follow the directions below to sign up:
- Please create a UCAN profile using this link by following the prompts. We recommend using your LinkedIn profile to get started. If you already have an account, simply sign in.
- You should be automatically prompted to join the EARTH group, but if not, you can find the group using this link, or search for it under the “Groups” tab.
Attend Conferences: Consider Presenting Papers at Relevant Conferences
- Graduate students can get funding from Rackham to attend conferences if they are presenting a paper: Rackham Conference Travel Grant.
- Each year, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences attends the Geological Society of America (GSA) and American Geophysical Union (AGU) annual meetings in the Fall semester.
- Students in the department can attend the Annual Michigan Geophysical Union Symposium in the Spring semester
Network With Peers to Find Out About Their Experiences
- GeoClub: Meetings are monthly and there are opportunities to participate in field trips and outreach events.
