Virtual Computing

Biophysics Linux Terminal Server

  • Host: brd-ts1.biop.lsa.umich.edu
  • Operating System: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
  • Software: MATLAB, VMD, others by request.

You'll need to download and install a piece of client software called NXClient.  For those of you who have use Remote Desktop on Windows or GoToMyPc, it's very similar.  The benefit is fast graphics and a full desktop environment.

Once downloaded you'll need to know a few settings to plug in.

Host: brd-ts1.biop.lsa.umich.edu
Desktop: UNIX GNOME 
Speed: WAN for fast connections (3+Mbit) ADSL (less than 3Mbit) 
Display Area: At least 1024x768 or full screen.

Then use your kerberos credentials to login.

With Virtual Sites, you can use the software on Campus Computing Sites Windows workstations remotely from any Mac or Windows computer with an internet connection.
