The University of Michigan Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program annually runs a summer fellowship program through which students complete research projects with Detroit community based organizations. The students work full-time at the organizations concerning a variety of research topics including the environment, urban agriculture, community development, public health, education and more. The students receive a stipend, are provided housing on the campus of Wayne State University, and participate in a curriculum that introduces them to the history of Detroit with a social justice lens. Together, the students become part of a learning community that informs and inspires each other about their research projects, the communities they work with, and their insights.
In addition to helping the community organizations advance their work, the fellowship is often a transformative experience for the students. Many students tell us that their experience in the fellowship influenced their careers and personal lives. We are pleased to share our summer program’s Annual Report, with details about the structure of the program, the students and community partners, financials, and reflections from the students at the conclusion of their experience.
Now entering its eighth year, our summer fellowship recently changed its name to Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program to be consistent with the University of Michigan’s Engaged Michigan initiative, articulating our commitment that faculty, staff, students and community members all play a critical role in addressing challenges and making our world better.
