The Detroit River Story Lab has received a $15,000 grant from the DTE Energy Foundation to support its Skiff & Schooner Program. The Schooner Program first hoisted its sails four years ago as an opportunity for local students to experience the Detroit River and learn about the environmental and cultural heritage of their home communities from the decks of a tall ship. These three-hour educational sailing trips feature an engaging hands-on curriculum that focuses on local marine ecology and the rich historical legacies of the river, including its important role in the Underground Railroad and current struggles for environmental justice.

The Schooner Program connects Detroit-area young people with nature through hands-on, outdoor learning adventures that spark curiosity and connection to their community. Through river-themed activities that engage the senses, teach practical skills, and explore the river’s secrets, the program transforms the Detroit River into a living classroom. By uniting youth with local community experts and researchers and educators from the University of Michigan, Inland Seas Education Association, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, it expands access to unforgettable educational experiences, making learning exciting, meaningful, and fun.

"This generous grant from DTE will enable this year's Schooner Program to reach another 750 young people—kids who might be inspired by what they learn to carry the lessons of the river's cultural and environmental heritage into their own future studies and careers," said David Porter, Detroit River Story Lab Principal Investigator and Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. "We are very excited to welcome them onboard this summer!"
