Phonetics & Phonology Lab

The faculty and students in the phonetics-phonology group at U-M bring experimental, quantitative, and computational methods to bear on theoretical questions related to sound structures, and human knowledge of these structures.

To facilitate research, we have acquired two 3D Electromagnetic Articulographs (EMA; the model is AG 501, manufactured by Carstens.  Each system has excellent temporal resolution (1250 samples per second) which allows us to track the movement of articulators in a precise manner. With two systems the articulatory movements of two speakers can be tracked simultaneously. This makes it possible to examine, for example, speech accommodation and speech production in dialogue. Find out more about all the equipment we utilize for our research.

Our research group, which extends beyond U-M to include faculty from nearby EMU, MSU, and Oakland University, meets approxmiately bi-weekly to discuss our work, as well as new research by others in the fields of phonetics and phonology.
