H. Joan Morley, Emerita Professor of Linguistics

1931–2025

Helen Joan Morley, Emerita Professor of Linguistics, passed away on March 27, 2025, at the
age of 93.

Professor Morley, who also taught in the English Language Institute (ELI) from 1968-2004, was a
pioneer and leading expert in the teaching of pronunciation, listening, and oral skills to non-native speakers of English. She edited several volumes and numerous papers on this and related areas. She wrote more than ten textbooks, all published by the University of Michigan Press, some of them achieving considerable critical and commercial success, with over a million copies finding their way into hands across the world. Professor Morley was an outstanding public speaker—she gave more than a hundred plenary or keynote addresses at conferences and traveled widely throughout the world on speaking engagements, often at the invitation of the Department of State.

Professor Morley was a tireless supporter of the TESOL International Association, serving as president of this 15,000-strong association of ESL specialists in 1986-87. At Michigan, Professor Morley served as acting director of the ELI on four occasions but never accepted the position for herself. She was a long-standing member of the Linguistics Undergraduate Committee and was largely responsible for developing a successful sub-concentration in Applied Linguistics/Second Language Studies during her years on the Linguistics faculty. Throughout her career, she was consistently one of the most successful and most appreciated teachers in both the Department of Linguistics and the ELI.

She earned a B.A. (1952) at the University of Northern Colorado, M.S. in Speech Pathology (1958) and M.A. in Linguistics (1968) at the University of Michigan. Before teaching in the ELI, she served as a lecturer in the Department of Speech (1959-1966). She was promoted to associate professor of linguistics in 1983 and to full professor in 1995, retiring from the active faculty in 2003.

A most fitting tribute to Professor Morley’s career was the establishment of the Morley scholarships, which brought almost 80 scholars from 28 countries to the ELI to do research on second language learning and teaching. Her exemplary service was recognized by a (Michigan) MITESOL Distinguished Service Award (1987), the TESOL International Association’s James E. Alatis Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession (1992), and Honored Alumni and Service Award, University of Northern Colorado (1996).

Her enduring legacy was her impact on those she worked with. She was beloved by the many graduate students who sought her guidance and were inspired by her over the years. Joan was a generous mentor, always cheerful (indeed, always a cheerleader and loyal Wolverine fan at Michigan football games).

H. Joan Morley, “Aunt Jo”, is survived by her nephew, William Bailey and his husband Mike Fernholz, and their son Matthew, her niece, Patricia Laury and her husband, Alan, a great niece, Autumn Cleary and her husband Daine and great great nephews, Nick Cleary, Jake Cleary, Joseph Cleary, and Bradley Cleary, and great great niece, Addison Cleary.
