The Linguistics Department is moving to a new home, at least for a few years. Our department has had several homes at U-M. After many years in the Frieze Building, we spent two years in a temporary landing spot in the Undergraduate Science Building, before moving to our new permanent home on the 4th floor of Lorch Hall in 2006. And now we’re moving again to a temporary landing spot in North Quad while Lorch Hall undergoes an extensive renovation. The plans are for us to move back to Lorch Hall in two to three years. Lorch Hall will look very different when we return to it. It will be expanded and undergo extensive renovations over the next few years. The addition will fill in the current exterior courtyard of the building, changing the building from an L-shape to a rectangle, and doubling the square footage available in the building. Additional changes will involve a complete renovation of the existing part of the building, as well as the addition of a large auditorium in a to-be-constructed new lower level. In keeping with the U-M’s sustainability goals, the building will be designed to be carbon-zero ready. Come visit us in North Quad, where the Linguistics Main Office will be on the 3rd floor!
