On November 14th Linguistics graduate students Dominique Canning, Sovoya Davis, and Kendall Lowe participated on a panel to discuss the film “Talking Black in America” and answered questions related to Black languages. The film provides an overview of African American Language by exploring its origins, the circumstances that shape the language, and the influence it has on other varieties of English.
I hope the discussion inspired attendees to consider how they can promote language equality throughout their own lives. Seemingly small acts, like not "correcting" the speech of African-American language users, can make all the difference.

The event was hosted by Language Matters, a group dedicated to promoting linguistic diversity on campus and beyond.
