Congratulations to Dr. Steven Abney on his recent promotion to Professor of Linguistics, with tenure. Professor Abney’s research program investigates a computational theory of human language, with a focus on accounting for the mappings between sounds, structures, and meanings that are established across languages, with his publications and computational research tools being recognized for their rigor and strong integration of theoretical analysis and computational implementation. He has also developed a number of courses in computational linguistics for the department, creating textbook-length course manuals and specialized software for many of them.
