AI English is, as Dr. Aull puts it, “English generated by bots—think ChatGPT, LLaMA, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek—which rely on English large language models (LLMs).”
In March, Aull published an article in The Conversation titled “How AI English and human English differ – and how to decide when to use artificial language.” In this article, she describes differences between AI and human English and provides recommendations for how AI and human English can “coexist.”
More recently, Dr. Aull was featured in the news series Ask an LSA Expert produced by U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. In the September issue, she was interviewed about AI and human English, offering a brief evolutionary history of AI English and explaining how AI and human English are produced and perceived differently. Dr. Aull also describes the recent developments in where AI English is being used, and speculates about the future impacts of AI English on human literacy.
