2015 U-M Linguistics PhD, Dr. Sujeewa Hettiarachchi has been recently hired with tenure as Senior Lecturer [Associate Professor] in Second Language Acquisition at Newcastle University’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. Congratulations to Sujeewa!
Sujeewa’s main research interests include adult second language acquisition and syntactic theory. His research is mainly dedicated to understanding how adult second language learners develop L2 syntactic knowledge under different input conditions (classroom learning vs. naturalistic exposure), how age-related constraints interact with their acquisition, and how second language speakers access their underlying syntactic competence to guide real-time language comprehension (L2 processing). Sujeewa is also interested in how different cognitive and affective factors determine success in adult second language acquisition.
