Lorenzo García-Amaya, Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics, was recently awarded the 2025 President’s Award for Leadership in International Education. This award recognizes faculty and staff for their vital contributions to providing U-M students with global education opportunities. Since 2005, Dr. García-Amaya has led 15 study abroad programs, including Advanced Spanish and Culture programs in the Spanish cities of Alicante, Santiago de Compostela , and Granada He will once again be leading an Advanced Spanish program in Santiago de Compostela in Spring/Summer 2026. Dr. García-Amaya has guided numerous undergraduate research projects related to international contexts, including in Spain, Argentina, and South Africa. For example, his recent collaborative project “From Africa to Patagonia: Voices of Displacement” connects Michigan classrooms with an Afrikaans-speaking community in Argentina, and involves a large team of undergraduate and graduate student collaborators.
