Professor Jessi Grieser was quoted in a recent New York Times article titled How LARPing, a Gaming Term, Became a Word for Posers. In this article, Dr. Grieser comments on the shifting definitions of words related to AI-generated content, saying that “[p]eople want to know the authenticity of what it is they’re running into online, and are more vigilant about it, and we’re getting some outgrowth of words relating to those things.” This includes the focus of this article: “larping,” which, as Grieser tells it, has come to mean “to pretend, pose, fake an identity, [especially] one with more status.”
Dr. Grieser regularly engages in public-facing linguistics. To read more about her recent media contributions, follow this link.
