Assistant Professor Huteng Dai led a workshop titled “Machine Learning for Linguists” at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) on May 29, 2025. The workshop provided a hands-on introduction to computational linguistics with a focus on machine learning approaches to address fundamental questions in linguistics and cognitive science—for example, how do any machines learn languages from noisy, real-world data? Professor Dai guided students through emerging research topics in computational linguistics, equipping them with the skills to work with large corpora and state-of-the-art models. Students practiced the pipeline of building machine learning models, while formalizing theoretically grounded questions that link computational models to linguistic theories and human cognition.
