Richard Abel published the essay, "Chicago's 'Censored Casualties' and the Provenance of Archive Prints" in Provenance and Early Cinema (Indiana University Press, 2020), 169-178. From April 1914 through November 1915, Kitty Kelly ended her film review columns in the Chicago Tribune with a section on "What the Censors Did." Her columns constitute a rare archive of what moviegoers in the city actually saw or did not see in the films shown in theaters. Consequently, they raise intriguing questions of provenance about the differences between the prints still viewable today and those seen in Chicago in 1914-1915.
