Alex Janevski is a geologist who has worked across many geology subdisciplines, from paleontology to mineral exploration. Originally from Ohio, where he grew up collecting fossils from the muddy creek beds around Cincinnati, Alex attended Case Western Reserve University for his BS. There, he collected fossils from the muddy creeks around Cleveland. After earning his doctorate at UM studying crinoids and mass extinctions, Alex joined the petroleum industry, eventually becoming a senior geologist for Shell in New Orleans. He studied the geology of the Gulf of Mexico and contributed to many offshore, deepwater exploration and development projects. While there he also was active in the coastal geology community and an active member and President of the New Orleans Geological Society, one of the U.S.’s oldest and largest local geology professional societies.
After a wonderful time spent in the great city of New Orleans, he developed a craving to see rocks again and moved to the mountains of New Mexico, joining Descartes Labs (DL), a satellite technology start-up. At DL he focused on growing the company’s applied geoscience solutions and managed projects in energy, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, infrastructure safety, and more. With a strong background in data science, Alex has been well-suited to work across geological disciplines, and in the wake of the AI/ML revolution has worked as a consultant on projects in mining, carbon capture and sequestration, and hydrogen development. The one guiding principle of his career has been to never stop learning.
