Associate Professor Hollis Griffin was quoted in a New York Times article related to sexuality and reality television
Dr. Hollis Griffin, associate professor in Communication and Media, was recently interviewed for and quoted in a New York Times article about sexuality in reality television.
The New York Times article, titled "Can You Re-enter Your Virgin Era? Pop Culture Does It All the Time." discusses the dating show "Are You My First?", how it may relate to a recent conservative cultural moment, and the broader focus on virginity in media and society.
Griffin sees the show as part of a backlash against the divisions, both political and cultural, over pronouns, gender identity, and sexual variety we've seen in recent years. "We’re in a moment — and I hope it’s brief — that it’s not cool to be different,” he says, and goes on to explain that the show treats virginity as something competitive and conniving and transactional, and that’s opposed to an expansive take on sexuality.”
